GRIN Swimmers Welcome 2005 in Style
About 45 NASTI (and friends-of-NASTI) swimmers rang in 2005 with 105 x 25s at Noblesville High School. This annual event let each swimmer take turns determining what the group would do, such as a length "tarazan-style" (freestyle, head up, yelling like the King of the Jungle) - although a few swimmers (i.e., Dan Welkelin) did the whole thing butterfly! After the fun practice, eight members took a detour to nearby Morse Lake for the team's annual Polar Bear Plunge before joining the rest of their teammates for a pitch-in luncheon. A few local newspapers also covered the groups' submersion in the "pleasant" 36* water as well as gave a great plug to Masters Swimming.
Members of Healthplex and Indy Swim Fit rang in 2005 with a 2005 yard swim on New Year's Day at 10 AM. Swimmers of all abilities were able to participate - the top four came in under 28 1/2 minutes - and most finished in under 45 minutes. Refreshments and prizes followed at about 10:45am when most swimmers were finished. About 21 participants were noted altogether with some swimming earlier to beat the crowd! This is the third year for the Healthplex event and the first year it was opened to the US Masters group as part of the merger with IndySwim Fit. Lead planner Tom Nagel noted to assistants Michelle Harter and Eileen Davis that much of the success and fun afterwards was due to the natural comaraderie of group event swimmers, helped along by the addition of new participants like the IndySwim Fit group and some new Healthplex members too. Next year promises to be even better once word of mouth gets around!
